The paranasal sinuses are a set of air-filled spaces located in the bones of the face and skull. They are situated around the nasal cavity and are interconnected with it. The main function of paranasal sinuses is to help humidify and warm the air we breathe in, and also to produce mucus that lubricates the nasal passages.

There are four pairs of paranasal sinuses, including the frontal, ethmoid, sphenoid, and maxillary sinuses. The frontal sinus is located in the forehead, the ethmoid sinus is located between the eyes and behind the nose, the sphenoid sinus is located at the back of the nose and above the throat, and the maxillary sinus is located in the cheekbones.

The paranasal sinuses play a role in voice resonance and contribute to the overall structural integrity of the skull. Infections of the sinuses, called sinusitis, can cause pain and pressure in the face, as well as congestion and difficulty breathing through the nose. Treatment for sinusitis may include antibiotics, nasal decongestants, and pain relievers. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to improve drainage and reduce the risk of future infections.
