When water is heated or exposed to high energy, some of its molecules gain enough energy to break free from the surface of the liquid and enter the gaseous state. This process is called evaporation or vaporization. Evaporation occurs at any temperature, but the rate increases with temperature and surface area. Once water molecules have entered the gaseous state, they can form water vapor which mixes with the air and can be carried away by the winds. Water vapor is an important component of the Earth’s atmosphere, since it is involved in many important processes such as cloud formation, precipitation, and the greenhouse effect.
