An alkene is a type of hydrocarbon that contains a carbon-carbon double bond. They are unsaturated compounds, meaning that they have fewer hydrogen atoms than the corresponding saturated hydrocarbon.

Alkenes have the general molecular formula CnH2n, where n is the number of carbon atoms in the molecule. They typically exhibit higher reactivity than alkanes due to the presence of the double bond, which can undergo addition reactions with a variety of reagents, including halogens, hydrogen halides, and water.

The physical properties of alkenes depend on their molecular size, shape, and polarity. Generally, smaller alkenes with a lower molecular weight are gases at room temperature, whereas larger alkenes with higher molecular weights are liquids or solids. Alkenes are generally insoluble in water but soluble in nonpolar solvents like ether or benzene.

Some common examples of alkenes include ethene (C2H4), propene (C3H6), and 1-butene (C4H8). Alkenes are widely used in industry as starting materials for the production of a wide variety of chemicals, including plastics, pharmaceuticals, and synthetic rubber.
