Benzene is an organic compound with the chemical formula C6H6. It is a colorless, flammable liquid with a sweet and pleasant odor and is mainly used as a precursor to many other chemicals, such as plastics, resins, synthetic fibers, rubber, dyes, detergents, and pharmaceuticals.

The benzene molecule is composed of six carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal ring with alternating double bonds, making it an aromatic compound. It has a planar structure with all carbon-carbon bond angles of 120 degrees.

Benzene has several interesting physical and chemical properties. It is a nonpolar molecule due to its symmetric structure, making it insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents such as alcohol, ether, and chloroform. It has a high melting point of 5.5 °C and a boiling point of 80.1 °C, which indicate strong intermolecular forces between the molecules.

One of the most important properties of benzene is its stability and resistance to reactions. This is due to its delocalized electron cloud, which provides extra stability to the molecule and makes it less reactive than other unsaturated hydrocarbons. Benzene undergoes electrophilic substitution reactions, such as nitration, sulfonation, and halogenation, in which an incoming electrophile can replace one of the hydrogen atoms on the ring.

However, benzene is also a highly toxic and carcinogenic substance, and exposure to it should be minimized. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified it as a Group 1 carcinogen, meaning that it is definitely carcinogenic to humans.
