Diploid refers to a cell or an organism that has two sets of chromosomes. In humans, diploid cells have 46 chromosomes, with 23 chromosomes coming from each parent. This is in contrast to haploid cells, which only have one set of chromosomes (23 in humans).

Diploid cells in organisms undergo a process called mitosis to produce two diploid daughter cells with identical genetic material. This is how somatic cells in our bodies divide and grow.

In contrast, specialized cells known as gametes undergo meiosis to produce haploid cells that are used for sexual reproduction. During meiosis, the diploid cell undergoes two rounds of cell division, resulting in the formation of four haploid daughter cells with unique genetic material. These haploid cells are then able to fuse with another haploid cell from a different parent during fertilization, resulting in the formation of a diploid zygote that contains a mix of genetic material from both parents.
