A change in matter that forms one or more new substances

A chemical change, also known as a chemical reaction, refers to a process in which one or more substances are transformed into new substances through the breaking and forming of chemical bonds. During a chemical change, the chemical composition and properties of the reactants are altered, resulting in the formation of one or more product(s) with entirely different characteristics.

For example, when iron rusts, a chemical change occurs. The iron reacts with oxygen in the presence of water to form hydrated iron oxide (rust), which has different physical and chemical properties than iron. Similarly, when vinegar and baking soda are mixed, a chemical reaction occurs that produces carbon dioxide gas and water.

Some common signs of a chemical change include a change in color or odor, the release or absorption of heat or light, the formation of a precipitate or gas, or a change in the physical state (such as melting or boiling).

It is important to note that a chemical change cannot be reversed by physical means, unlike a physical change such as melting or freezing. In order to reverse a chemical change, a different chemical reaction must occur.
