For example, the structural formula for water (H2O) shows that it contains two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. The oxygen atom is bonded to each hydrogen atom by a covalent bond, and the whole molecule has an overall tetrahedral shape.

In more complex molecules, the structural formula can become quite intricate, with many chemical bonds and functional groups represented. For example, the structural formula for glucose (C6H12O6) shows the arrangement of six carbon atoms, 12 hydrogen atoms, and six oxygen atoms, along with a number of hydroxyl and carbonyl functional groups.

Structural formulas are useful for predicting chemical reactions, understanding the properties and behavior of molecules, and designing new compounds for specific applications.
