Understanding Conjunctivitis: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options

inflammation of the conjunctiva

conjunctivitis (pink eye)

Inflammation of the conjunctiva is a condition known as conjunctivitis or pink eye. It is a common eye condition that causes redness, itching, and swelling of the conjunctiva, a thin and transparent layer of tissue that lines the front of the eye and the inside of the eyelids. There are a variety of factors that can cause conjunctivitis including bacterial or viral infections, allergies, irritants, and underlying health conditions.

The symptoms of conjunctivitis can vary based on the cause of the inflammation. Bacterial conjunctivitis usually causes a thick, yellow or green discharge from the eye, while viral conjunctivitis causes a watery discharge. Allergic conjunctivitis usually causes itching, watering, and redness of the eyes. Conjunctivitis caused by irritants can cause redness and pain.

The treatment of conjunctivitis varies depending on the cause. Bacterial conjunctivitis is typically treated with antibiotics, either topically or orally, while viral conjunctivitis usually clears up on its own within a week or two. Allergic conjunctivitis can be treated with over-the-counter antihistamines or prescription medications, and irritant conjunctivitis should be treated by removing the irritant and using artificial tears to soothe the eyes.

To prevent conjunctivitis, it’s important to practice good hygiene such as washing your hands regularly, avoiding touching your eyes, and cleaning contact lenses properly. If you have symptoms of conjunctivitis, it’s essential to see an eye doctor to determine the cause and get appropriate treatment.
