Unlocking the Role of Endophytes in Plant-Fungal Mutualism and Sustainable Agriculture

Endophyte

an organism, particularly of fungus, that lives inside a plant for part or all of its life as a parasite or in a mutualistic (the fungus and plant both benefit) relationship- e.g. endophyte enhanced tall fescue (grass) that experiences increased growth and stress tolerance

An endophyte refers to a fungus that resides inside the plant tissues intercellularly or intracellularly without causing any apparent harm to the host plant. Endophytes are often found in grasses, especially in cool-season grasses such as fescue, ryegrass, and bluegrass. They play a significant role in the plant-fungal mutualism through which the plant is able to tolerate stressful environmental conditions, such as drought, insect infestation, and nutrient deficiency.

Endophytes can be categorized into two types based on the type of plant tissue they reside in: foliar endophytes and systemic endophytes. Foliar endophytes reside in the leaves, and systemic endophytes are located in other plant parts, such as the roots, stems, and seeds. Endophytes help the host plants by producing secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, which help protect the plants from herbivory and pathogens.

Endophytes can also benefit the host plant by facilitating nutrient uptake and water absorption from the soil. The endophyte-host plant relationship can vary based on factors like the environmental conditions, plant species, and the specific endophyte involved. Researchers are exploring ways to use endophytes in agriculture, such as for improving plant growth and productivity, reducing chemical inputs, and mitigating climate change impacts.
