Deltoid
shoulder muscle
The deltoid is a large, triangular-shaped muscle located on the uppermost part of the arm and the shoulder. It is composed of three parts: the anterior (front), medial (middle), and posterior (back) heads.
The anterior deltoid is responsible for shoulder flexion, or lifting your arms straight forward, as well as internal rotation, or rotating your arms inward. The medial deltoid is responsible for shoulder abduction, or lifting your arms straight out to the side. The posterior deltoid is responsible for shoulder extension, or pulling your arms back, as well as external rotation, or rotating your arms outward.
Strengthening the deltoids can help improve upper body strength and stability, and can also help prevent shoulder injuries. Exercises such as shoulder presses, lateral raises, and reverse flys can target the different parts of the deltoids and help strengthen them. It is important to use proper form and weight when performing these exercises to avoid injury.
