ERPS is an enhancement of the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) and provides faster recovery times by bypassing the convergence time of STP, which can be several seconds. ERPS offers both protection and recovery options for Ethernet ring topologies that include dual homing and redundant links.

ERPS works by creating a logical ring topology from a physical one. It uses a pair of control messages called the ERPS control frame and the Path Switching Frame (PSF) to monitor the status of the network. The control frame is sent periodically by the edge nodes to the other nodes on the ring, indicating the status of the links. Any failure can be detected quickly, and the PSF is sent by the edge nodes to switch the traffic to the alternate path and restore connectivity.

ERPS provides several benefits over STP. ERPS allows for faster recovery times, lower overhead, and less complexity than STP. It also adds flexibility by providing a choice of protection options, including the ability to select which link will be the protection path and which link will carry the traffic.
