Cystolithiasis: Understanding Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment Options

cystolith

a stone located within the urinary bladder

Cystolith refers to the occurrence of small mineralized bodies or stones within the bladder. These stones are mainly composed of calcium salts. People with cystolithiasis can experience severe pain and discomfort while urinating, frequent urination, urge to urinate, and pain in the lower abdomen. In advanced cases, they may also experience blood in the urine.

The diagnosis of cystolith is typically made through imaging studies such as X-rays, CT scans, or ultrasound which can detect the presence of the stones in the bladder. Treatment options include medication to help dissolve or remove the stones, or surgical intervention to remove them completely.

In order to prevent the formation of cystoliths, it is important to drink plenty of water every day as well as limit or avoid foods that are high in calcium and oxalate. Maintaining good hygiene and emptying the bladder frequently can also help prevent the development of cystoliths.
