A deadbolt is a type of lock that is intended to provide enhanced security to a locking system. Unlike other locks that may be more easily bypassed or forced open, deadbolts are designed to be much more difficult to defeat. This is because deadbolts work by using a large bolt or bar that extends deep into the door frame, making it much more challenging to open the door without the correct key or combination.

There are different types of deadbolts, including single-cylinder, double-cylinder, and jimmy-proof designs. Single-cylinder deadbolts are most commonly used, especially in residential buildings. They require a key to lock and unlock from the outside, and a thumbturn on the inside can be used to lock and unlock from the inside without a key.

Double-cylinder deadbolts are less common because they require a key to lock and unlock both from the inside and outside of the door. They offer increased security but can also pose a safety hazard in case of an emergency when the key is not readily available.

Jimmy-proof deadbolts are unique in that they do not require a key to lock or unlock. Instead, they have two surface-mounted vertical bolts that interlock with the strike plate on the door frame. They are especially useful for lightweight doors or double doors because they anchor the door to the frame, making it much more difficult to force open.

Regardless of the type, using a deadbolt is an excellent way to secure a door and increase the safety and protection of your home or business.
