Common Names of Aldehydes
– An aldehyde has a terminal functional group due to the one hydrogen- Ketone has two alkyl groups so it’s never a terminal group.
Here are some common names of aldehydes:
1. Formaldehyde
2. Acetaldehyde
3. Propionaldehyde
4. Butyraldehyde
5. Benzaldehyde
6. Glyoxaldehyde
7. Valeraldehyde
8. Methylglyoxaldehyde
9. Crotonaldehyde
10. Cinnamaldehyde.
Note that while these names are widely used, it is important to know the systematic names of aldehydes as well, which follow the IUPAC naming rules. For example, formaldehyde is also known as methanal, and acetaldehyde is also known as ethanal.
