What percentage of all microbes are pathogenic?
<1%
Only a small percentage of all microbes are pathogenic. In fact, the majority of microbes are either beneficial or harmless to humans and the environment. According to a study published in the journal PLOS Biology, out of an estimated 8.7 million species of eukaryotic and prokaryotic microbes on Earth, only about 100,000 are known to be pathogens that can cause diseases in humans. This means that less than 1% of all microbes are pathogenic. It’s important to note, however, that even non-pathogenic microbes can sometimes cause infections or become harmful under certain circumstances, such as when they are present in large numbers or when a person’s immune system is weakened.
