The diaphysis is the middle, cylindrically shaped shaft or body of a long bone. It contains the medullary cavity, which is a hollow central space that is lined with a thin layer of bone tissue called the endosteum. The diaphysis is mainly composed of compact bone tissue that provides strength and support to the bone, but it also contains spongy or cancellous bone tissue at its ends where it meets the epiphyses.

The diaphysis provides the main site for the attachment of muscles and ligaments, which help in the movement of the bone. It also contains blood vessels and nerves, which supply nutrients and oxygen to the bone cells, and also help in sensory function.

During bone growth and development, the diaphysis elongates by the process of endochondral ossification, where cartilage is gradually replaced by bone tissue. In adults, the diaphysis is important in bone repair and remodeling, as it provides a framework for bone regeneration and strengthening after injuries or fractures.
