Sleep Apnea: Causes, Types, and Treatment Options

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that can cause significant disruptions in the breathing patterns while you are sleeping. This disorder typically occurs when the muscles in the back of your throat fail to keep the airway open, resulting in brief interruptions in breathing. This can lead to a drop in the oxygen levels in your body and can cause you to gasp, gag or even choke.

There are three main types of sleep apnea:

1. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA): This type of sleep apnea is the most common form and occurs due to a blockage or obstruction in the airway.

2. Central Sleep Apnea (CSA): This type of sleep apnea occurs due to a failure in the brain’s signal to the muscles that control your breathing.

3. Mixed Sleep Apnea: This type of sleep apnea is a combination of both central and obstructive sleep apnea.

The most common symptoms of sleep apnea include loud snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness, waking up frequently during the night with shortness of breath, morning headaches, difficulty in concentrating, irritability, and mood swings.
