Atoms are the basic building blocks of matter, consisting of a nucleus made up of protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons. The number of protons in the nucleus determines the element to which the atom belongs. Atoms are incredibly small, with a typical size range of 0.1 to 0.5 nanometers. They are held together by a combination of electromagnetic forces and nuclear forces. Atoms can combine with each other through chemical reactions to form molecules, and can also be ionized (gain or lose electrons) to form ions. The study of atoms and their behavior falls under the field of atomic physics.
