Enterobius vermicularis, also known as pinworms, are small, white, thread-like worms that infect the intestines of humans. They are one of the most common types of intestinal parasites found in humans, especially children.

These worms are highly contagious and are easily spread from person to person through direct contact with infected individuals, or by touching contaminated objects such as bedding, clothing, or toys. The eggs of the pinworms can survive for up to two weeks on these objects.

Symptoms of pinworm infection include intense itching around the anus, particularly at night, and sometimes abdominal pain and nausea. Diagnosis is usually made by observing the worms or their eggs in stool samples or around the anus.

Treatment for pinworms typically involves medication, such as mebendazole or pyrantel pamoate, which kill the worms. Proper hygiene practices, such as regularly washing hands and bedding, can also help prevent the spread of the infection.
