Cardiac notch
Is an indentation in the left lung where the heart lies against the lung forming an indentation.
The cardiac notch is a concavity or an indentation on the left lung’s superior lobe, situated on the anterior surface. The cardiac notch is required to accommodate the heart’s left atrium, which is positioned between the two lungs. Due to the cardiac notch’s shape, the left lung is smaller than the right lung, consisting of two lobes, upper and lower lobes, whereas the right lung has three lobes. The cardiac notch’s location is an important consideration for lung surgeries and medical imaging of the thorax, as it allows radiologists or surgeons to differentiate between the right and left lungs because it is a distinguishing characteristic of the left lung.
