There are many recognized roles of law enforcement (LE), but one function that is not considered to be a recognized role of LE is taking the law into one’s own hands or acting as a judge, jury, and executioner. This means that it is not the responsibility of law enforcement officers to administer punishment to individuals whom they deem guilty of committing crimes. Instead, it is the job of the legal system to determine guilt or innocence through due process.
Law enforcement officers have the responsibility to enforce the law by protecting the safety and well-being of individuals, preventing crime, and investigating criminal activities. They must uphold the principles of justice, equality, and human rights while performing their duties. If they come across any criminal activity, their job is to apprehend suspects and bring them to justice.
It should be emphasized that the use of force by law enforcement officers should be reasonable and proportionate to the situation at hand. Law enforcement officers undergo rigorous training to ensure that they act professionally, ethically, and respectfully toward all members of their community. Acts of excessive force or other unprofessional behavior can result in disciplinary action or even criminal charges for the officer.
