Why the Northern States Opposed Slavery and its Impact on American History – An Overview

What did the northern states want with slavery and the population?

If the slaves were counted for representation, they should have to pay taxes

The northern states did not want slavery because they believed it was morally wrong to own and exploit other human beings. They also did not want slavery to spread into new territories and states as it would give southern states more political power and upset the balance of power in Congress. Additionally, northern states had different economic systems based on industry and manufacturing, rather than agriculture and manual labor, and therefore did not rely on slave labor for their economic success.

In terms of population, the northern states had higher populations due to greater industrialization, immigration, and urbanization. This gave them more representation in Congress and greater political influence. Additionally, the northern states had a higher percentage of free blacks, who were denied basic rights and freedoms in southern slave states. This led to tensions and conflicts between the two regions, which eventually culminated in the Civil War.
