What did the Europeans do during the Berlin Conference?
Agreed on the ground rules for dividing Africa into colonies
The Europeans convened the Berlin Conference in 1884-1885 to regulate the colonization and trade in Africa. During the Conference, the European powers divided Africa among themselves without consulting the African people. They agreed to respect each other’s colonial boundaries, and any future claims to African territory would have to be based on “effective occupation.” This meant that European powers had to demonstrate their ability to control and exploit the colonized territories in order to claim them. The Berlin Conference led to the Partition of Africa, which resulted in the continent being divided into arbitrary borders that ignored ethnic and cultural lines and led to a legacy of conflict and instability.
