A person forced to leave his or her country because of war, persecution, or natural disaster
A refugee is a person who has fled their country due to persecution, war, or violence. They often have a well-founded fear of persecution based on factors such as their race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group.
Refugees may have suffered trauma and may often have limited resources, including food, shelter, and access to healthcare. As such, they are usually in need of protection, assistance, and support, both in the country they have fled from and the country they seek refuge in.
The international legal definition of a refugee is outlined in the 1951 UN Refugee Convention, which defines a refugee as someone who “owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality and is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country.”
It is important to recognize the human rights of refugees and provide them with the necessary support and protection they need to start a new life in a safe and secure environment.
