Heteronormativity
A term that sociologists use to describe the cultural presupposition that heterosexuality is the appropriate standard for sexual identity and practice and that alternative sexualities are deviant, abnormal, or wrong.
Heteronormativity refers to social norms that assume heterosexuality as the only normal and legitimate sexual orientation. It describes a cultural and societal belief that heterosexuality is the default, expected, and ideal sexual orientation, and that all other forms of sexuality are abnormal or deviant. It is important to recognize and challenge heteronormativity to create a more inclusive and accepting society that celebrates diversity in sexual and gender identities. This can involve actively seeking out and centering marginalized voices, using gender-inclusive language, challenging assumptions about sexuality and gender identity, and advocating for LGBTQ+ rights and representation.
