Exploring the Historical Significance and Consequences of the Berlin Conference of 1884-85 in African Colonization and Exploitation

Berlin Conference, 1884-85

A meeting from 1884-1885 at which representatives of European nations agreed on rules colonization of Africa. The borders of the colonies were drawn, which did not reflect the geographic, ethnic and tribal reality of Africa; Formal recognition and organization of European occupation of Africa.

The Berlin Conference, also known as the Congo Conference, was held from November 1884 to February 1885 in Berlin, Germany. The conference was called by the Chancellor of Germany, Otto von Bismarck, and was attended by representatives of 14 European countries and the United States. The main purpose of the conference was to establish rules and guidelines for the colonization and trade in Africa.

During the conference, the European powers discussed and negotiated the partitioning of Africa among themselves. The European powers agreed to respect each other’s claims to particular territories and agreed on the principle of effective occupation, meaning that a power could only claim a territory if it had established control over it. They also agreed to protect and promote freedom of trade and navigation in the Congo Basin.

The conference was significant in that it formalized the scramble for Africa, accelerating the process of colonization and exploitation of the continent. It also reflected the arrogance and hypocrisy of the European powers, who claimed to be promoting the welfare of the indigenous people, but in reality were only interested in exploiting Africa’s natural resources and expanding their territories.

The legacy of the Berlin Conference was profound and far-reaching. It contributed significantly to the European colonization and partitioning of Africa, and the subsequent subjugation and exploitation of the continent. The conference has been criticized for its lack of representation for African peoples, who were not consulted during the process. It was a clear manifestation of imperialist ambitions, and the legacy of its decisions still lingers in Africa today.
