Understanding and Overcoming Racism: A Call to Action for a Just Society

Racism

Ideas, assumptions, and beliefs that support biased viewpoints and prejudicial actions based on a feeling of superiority over another group because of their skin color. A belief that certain groups should not be allowed to participate in the process of government or economic opportunity, that they may be discriminated against due to their physical characteristics, and that they are inferior based on physical appearance. There is no scientific basis for grouping people in this manner.

Racism is the belief in the existence of distinct biological races, with certain racial groups deemed superior or inferior to others. It involves prejudice, discrimination, and the systemic oppression of certain racial groups based solely on their skin color or ethnicity.

Racism has a long and troubling history dating back centuries. It has been used as a tool to justify slavery, colonization, and genocide, and has had a profound and lasting impact on individuals and entire societies. Racism is not limited to any particular part of the world or culture, and no race or ethnic group is immune to experiencing or perpetuating it.

Overcoming racism requires acknowledging its existence and the harm it causes, educating ourselves and others about the impacts of racism, and working collectively to dismantle systems of oppression and inequality. This can be achieved through advocacy, education, listening to and uplifting marginalized voices, and actively challenging the attitudes and practices that perpetuate racism at an individual, interpersonal, and systemic level.
