Thurstone is a psychologist known for his work in the fields of psychometrics and intelligence testing. He developed a theory of intelligence that differed from the widely accepted idea of a single, general intelligence factor. Thurstone’s theory proposed that intelligence was made up of several independent primary mental abilities, including spatial visualization, verbal comprehension, numerical ability, perceptual speed, word fluency, memory, and reasoning ability.
Thurstone also developed a series of tests, called the Primary Mental Abilities tests, which assessed each of these abilities separately. These tests were widely used in the mid-20th century and had a significant impact on the development of intelligence testing.
In addition to his work on intelligence, Thurstone also conducted research in the areas of attitude measurement, factor analysis, and psychophysics. He is considered one of the founders of modern psychometrics, the field of psychological measurement, and assessment.
