Studies have shown that the development of these prodigious abilities is linked to certain brain regions, such as the cerebellum and the left hemisphere, and that they may be due to a malfunctioning in the brain’s filtering system. This suggests that savant skills may be the product of the brain’s ability to “hyperfocus” on specific tasks.
While savant syndrome is rare, occurring in only a small percentage of individuals with developmental disabilities, it has been the subject of considerable scientific research.
