The infraspinatus muscle is one of the four muscles that make up the rotator cuff of the shoulder joint. It is located in the posterior (back) portion of the shoulder blade, specifically in the infraspinous fossa, which is a shallow depression on the surface of the bone.

The origin of the infraspinatus muscle is on the infraspinous fossa of the scapula, which is the furrow that separates the spine and the edge of the scapula. From this origin, the muscle fibers run horizontally across the back of the shoulder joint and attach to the greater tubercle of the humerus. The greater tubercle is a bony prominence on the upper and lateral part of the humerus, located just below the shoulder joint.

The insertion of the infraspinatus muscle onto the greater tubercle of the humerus allows it to play an important role in the movement and stability of the shoulder joint. When it contracts, the infraspinatus muscle assists in external rotation (outward rotation) of the arm and also helps to prevent dislocation of the humerus during movement. It is a crucial muscle for shoulder stability and proper shoulder function.
