An absolute monarchy is a form of government in which the monarch has complete and unrestricted authority over the state and its citizens. In this type of government, the monarch is the highest authority, and there are no checks and balances on their power. The monarch has the power to make decisions regarding all aspects of government, including legislation, taxation, foreign policy, and the use of military force.
Absolute monarchies were common in Europe during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Examples of absolute monarchies include the French monarchy under Louis XIV, the Russian monarchy under the Romanovs, and the Austro-Hungarian monarchy under the Habsburgs.
The power of absolute monarchies has significantly decreased over the past few centuries. In most modern countries, the concept of a constitutional monarchy has replaced absolute monarchy. In a constitutional monarchy, the monarch’s powers are limited by a constitution, which provides for the separation of powers, guarantee of individual rights, and checks and balances on the monarch’s power. Examples of modern constitutional monarchies include the United Kingdom, Japan, and Sweden.
