Tomas Mapua is a prominent Filipino architect and educator who is known for his contributions towards the development and modernization of Philippine architecture during the early 20th century. He was born on December 17, 1890, in Intramuros, Manila, Philippines.

Mapua graduated from the University of Santo Tomas with a degree in Architecture in 1916, and later in 1918, he pursued further studies at Columbia University in New York City where he finished his post-graduate studies. He then returned to the Philippines in 1920 and founded the Mapua Institute of Technology, which is now one of the leading engineering and technology universities of the Philippines.

As an architect, Mapua is known for his distinct style that combined the classic and modern architectural elements. He was also known for designing buildings that were earthquake-proof, which was an important factor in the Philippines, a country that is prone to earthquakes.

Some of his notable works include the Far Eastern University (FEU) campus, the Philippine Trust Company Building, Avery & Company Factory, and the Capitol Theater among others. His works are not only admired for their functionality and aesthetics, but also for their significance in the cultural heritage of the Philippines.
