Rene Descartes (1596-1650) was a French philosopher, mathematician, and scientist who is widely regarded as the father of modern philosophy. He is best known for his philosophical work Meditations on First Philosophy, in which he argues for a systematic method of doubt and proposes the famous phrase “I think, therefore I am”. Descartes considered himself a rationalist who believed that knowledge could be acquired through reason and innate ideas. He believed that the natural world could be understood through mathematics and that the mind and body were separate entities, which became known as Cartesian dualism. Descartes’ work had a significant impact on the Enlightenment era and modern Western philosophy.
