In ancient Greece, every household had a hearth, where the sacred flame was kept burning day and night, and Hestia was the protector of this sacred flame. She was considered the goddess of hospitality, and it was customary to offer her the first and last libations at every feast. Her role was vital in maintaining the harmony within the family and in the city-state, as the hearth was seen as the center of the home and the community.

Hestia was also a virgin goddess, which meant that she never engaged in sexual activities, unlike many other Greek gods and goddesses. This made her a symbol of purity and chastity, and she was often invoked to bless marriages.

While Hestia did not play a significant role in many of the Greek myths, she was highly respected and honored by the Greeks. Her temple in Athens, the Hearth of the City, was considered a sacred site, and only the Vestal Virgins were allowed to tend to her flame. Hestia’s importance was also reflected in the fact that her name came first in prayers and offerings, as she was seen as the most important goddess in the ancient Greek pantheon.
