cramp roll
Step using toe and heel drops in a specific pattern.
The cramp roll is a fundamental step in tap dance that involves creating a quick, rolling motion with the feet. It is typically performed while standing in place and involves a constant shifting of weight and quick, short movements of the toes and heels.
To perform a cramp roll, begin by standing with your feet together and your weight evenly distributed between them. Lift your right foot and press the ball of your foot down onto the floor, bending the knee slightly. Quickly lift the heel of your right foot and tap the toe back down onto the floor. This should create a rolling motion that moves from the balls of your feet to the heels, as if you were rolling a small ball under your foot.
As soon as the toe of your right foot touches the floor, lift your left foot and repeat the same motion with your left foot. Continue alternating between your right and left foot, creating a constant rolling motion that moves from one foot to the other.
The cramp roll is often used as a basic stepping stone to more complex tap dance movements, as it helps dancers develop coordination, speed, and control in their footwork. Practice is key in mastering the cramp roll, so take the time to focus on getting the timing and technique just right.
