Mastering the Ball Change Dance Step and Techniques

Ball change

Two quick changes of weight from one ball of the foot to the other.

A ball change is a dance step commonly used in many dancing styles, including tap dance, jazz, and hip hop. It involves a quick change of weight from one foot to another, typically done while standing in place or moving in a direction.

Here are the steps to perform a ball change:

1. Begin with your feet shoulder-width apart and your weight evenly distributed between both feet.
2. Shift your weight onto your right foot, lifting your left foot slightly off the ground.
3. Quickly replace your left foot back onto the ground, but place the ball of your foot down first, followed by the heel. This is your first “ball” action.
4. Quickly shift your weight back onto your left foot, lifting your right foot slightly off the ground.
5. Replace your right foot back onto the ground, placing the ball of your foot down first, followed by the heel. This is your second “ball” action.
6. Continue alternating between the left and right foot, performing the ball change in a swift, fluid motion.

A ball change is often used as a transition step between two other dance steps, such as a shuffle or a hop. It is an essential step in many dance routines and is widely used in choreography. Practice the ball change step slowly at first, gradually building up speed until you can perform it in time with the music.
