Sentence Types
Questions, negations, commands, topicalization, conditionals, and declaratives
There are four main sentence types in English: declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory.
1. Declarative sentences make statements and end with a period. For example: “I am going to the store.”
2. Interrogative sentences ask questions and end with a question mark. For example: “Where is the store?”
3. Imperative sentences give commands or make requests and end with a period or exclamation point. For example: “Go to the store.” or “Please go to the store!”
4. Exclamatory sentences express strong emotions and end with an exclamation point. For example: “I can’t believe I found my keys!”
It is important to understand these sentence types because they can affect the tone and meaning of the sentence. Correctly identifying and using sentence types can help communicate your intended message effectively.
