In statistics, the mean is a measure of central tendency for a set of data. It is also known as arithmetic mean. The mean is calculated by adding up all the values in a data set and dividing the sum by the number of values in the set.

The formula for calculating the mean is:

Mean = (sum of all values) / (number of values)

For example, let’s say we have the following set of data:

9, 2, 5, 7, 12

To calculate the mean, we would add up all the values:
9 + 2 + 5 + 7 + 12 = 35

Then, we would divide the sum by the number of values in the set (which is 5 in this case):
Mean = 35 / 5 = 7

Therefore, the mean for this set of data is 7.
