Relationship between Redox Potential and Oxygen Levels

Why does low redox potential mean less oxygen?

The redox potential is a measure of the tendency of a substance to gain or lose electrons and undergo oxidation or reduction reactions. In the context of oxygen, the redox potential refers to the ease with which oxygen can accept electrons and undergo reduction. Therefore, a low redox potential means that oxygen has a strong tendency to gain electrons and be reduced.

To understand why low redox potential means less oxygen, we need to look at the reaction between oxygen and other substances. Oxygen is a very electronegative element, meaning it strongly attracts electrons. In the process of reduction, oxygen accepts electrons from other substances and is itself reduced. This reaction is commonly seen in biological systems, where oxygen acts as a terminal electron acceptor in cellular respiration

Now, when we talk about redox potential, we are comparing the tendency of different substances to accept or donate electrons. If the redox potential of a substance is low, it means that it has a high affinity for electrons and a strong tendency to accept them (undergo reduction). In the case of oxygen, a low redox potential indicates that it readily accepts electrons from other substances and gets reduced

So, how does this relate to the presence of oxygen? In environments with a low redox potential, other substances present (such as organic matter or reducing agents) have a higher affinity for electrons compared to oxygen. These substances readily accept electrons and undergo reduction instead of oxygen. As a result, the amount of available oxygen decreases in such environments

For example, in anoxic (low-oxygen) conditions like in the bottom sediments of a lake or an oxygen-limited microbial environment, organic matter serves as the electron acceptor, rather than oxygen. This results in a low redox potential due to the high demand for electron acceptors other than oxygen. Therefore, less oxygen is present in these environments because it is being outcompeted by other substances with higher redox potential

In summary, a low redox potential means that oxygen has a strong tendency to accept electrons, leading to its reduction. This results in less available oxygen, as other substances with higher redox potential readily accept electrons and undergo reduction instead
