In mathematics, the term “continuous” refers to the concept of a function having no breaks, jumps, or holes in its graph. A function is said to be continuous if it can be drawn without lifting the pencil from the paper.

More formally, a function f(x) is continuous at a particular point x = c if three conditions are met:

1. The function is defined at c: This means that the value of f(x) is defined and exists at x = c.

2. The limit of f(x) as x approaches c exists: This means that as x gets arbitrarily close to c, the values of f(x) also get arbitrarily close to a certain value. In other words, there is no sudden jump or discontinuity in the values of f(x) as x approaches c.

3. The value of the function at c is equal to the limit: This means that f(c) is equal to the value that the limit approached in condition 2. This ensures that there are no holes or gaps in the graph at x = c.

A function is said to be continuous on an interval if it is continuous at every point within that interval. This means that there are no abrupt changes or discontinuities anywhere within the interval.

Continuous functions have many important properties and applications in mathematics. They can be used to model a wide range of real-world phenomena and are essential in fields such as calculus, analysis, and physics. The concept of continuity allows mathematicians to make important deductions and establish relationships between different mathematical objects.
