When performing operations with integers, addition and subtraction follow the normal rules you would use with whole numbers. For example, adding a positive integer to another positive integer results in a positive integer, while adding a positive integer to a negative integer can result in either a positive or negative integer. Subtracting a positive integer from another positive integer or a negative integer from another negative integer follows the same rules. However, subtracting a negative integer from a positive integer is equivalent to adding the absolute values of the numbers.

Multiplication and division with integers have additional rules. When multiplying or dividing two integers with the same sign (both positive or both negative), the result is always positive. On the other hand, when multiplying or dividing two integers with different signs, the result is always negative. For example, (-5) * (-2) = 10, while (-5) * 2 = -10.

Understanding the concept of integers is essential in various areas of mathematics, including algebra, number theory, and even in everyday life applications that involve positive and negative quantities.
