In probability, we define an experiment as any process that produces an outcome. The set of all possible outcomes of an experiment is called the sample space, denoted by ‘S’. Each outcome in the sample space is called an element or a sample point.
The probability of an event ‘A’ occurring is denoted by P(A) and is defined as the ratio of the number of favorable outcomes to the total number of possible outcomes. Mathematically, it can be written as:
P(A) = Number of favorable outcomes / Total number of possible outcomes
The probability of an event always falls between 0 and 1 (inclusive), where 0 represents impossibility (an event that cannot occur) and 1 represents certainty (an event that is guaranteed to happen).
There are three types of probabilities: theoretical, empirical, and subjective probabilities.
1. Theoretical Probability: It is calculated based on the assumption that all outcomes are equally likely. For example, in a fair six-sided dice, the probability of rolling a 3 is 1/6.
2. Empirical Probability: It is determined by conducting experiments or collecting data to observe the occurrence of an event. The probability is then calculated using the observed outcomes. For example, flipping a coin multiple times and calculating the ratio of heads to total flips.
3. Subjective Probability: It is based on personal judgments or opinions. It is often used when we do not have enough data or when the outcomes are not equally likely. For example, estimating the probability of rain tomorrow based on personal observations and experience.
Probability theory also includes various concepts such as conditional probability, independent events, dependent events, and the addition and multiplication rules. These concepts allow us to calculate probabilities in more complex situations, including multiple events occurring together or one event affecting the probability of another.
Probability is applicable in various fields including statistics, economics, physics, computer science, and finance. It is widely used in decision-making, risk assessment, forecasting, and understanding random processes.
