In computer networking, the running configuration refers to the current configuration settings of a network device, such as a router or switch.

It represents the configuration that is currently applied and active on the device.

The running configuration is temporary and exists only in the device’s memory while it is powered on. It is not persistent or saved across device restarts or power outages. If you want to make configuration changes permanent, you need to save the running configuration to a storage area called the “startup configuration” or “running-config to startup-config copy.” This process copies the current running configuration into a non-volatile memory that is preserved even when the device is rebooted.

By examining the running configuration, network administrators can view and analyze the current settings of a network device. It is also helpful for troubleshooting issues or comparing configurations with other devices.

To view the running configuration on a Cisco router or switch, for example, you can use the “show running-config” command in the device’s CLI. Other network devices may have different commands or methods to access and display the running configuration.

It is important to note that the running configuration may contain sensitive information like passwords, IP addresses, and other security-related settings. Therefore, it should be handled with care and only accessible by authorized individuals.
