Troubleshooting Workstation IP Configuration Issues: DHCP Server and Network Connectivity Problems

A network technician enters the command ipconfig /release followed by ipconfig /renew in order to ensure that the DHCP IP configuration on a workstation is updated. However, the workstation does not receive a valid IP configuration for the network. Which two problems may exist on the network?

There are several potential problems that could prevent the workstation from receiving a valid IP configuration after issuing the ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew commands.

Two possible problems could be:

1. DHCP server issues: The DHCP server responsible for assigning IP addresses to devices on the network may not be functioning properly. This could be due to misconfigured settings, insufficient available IP addresses in the DHCP pool, or the DHCP service being offline or inaccessible. In this case, the technician should check the DHCP server’s configuration, ensure there are enough available IP addresses, and verify that the DHCP service is running.

2. Network connectivity issues: If the workstation is unable to communicate with the DHCP server, it won’t be able to receive a valid IP configuration. Issues such as a faulty network cable, misconfigured network settings, or network congestion could be causing the lack of connectivity. The technician should check the physical network connection, ensure that the network settings on the workstation are correctly configured (including the correct DHCP server IP address), and analyze the network traffic to identify any bottlenecks or congested areas.

It’s worth mentioning that there could be other problems as well, such as firewall blocking DHCP traffic or incorrect IP range settings on the DHCP server, so it’s important for the technician to perform a thorough troubleshooting process to identify and resolve the issue.
